Searching for an English tutor for a Year 1–2 reader? This term’s novel study class moves your child from simply looking at picture books to genuinely thinking about them — the first real step toward strong comprehension.

What This Class Is About

We use two picture books, The Architect and Migaloo the White Whale, chosen because they give young readers plenty to notice, question, and discuss — not just pages to turn.

What We’re Covering This Term

  • The Architect: a story about a child who dreams big and builds it — a simple plot with huge room for imagination and discussion.
  • Migaloo the White Whale: based on the true story of a rare, real all-white humpback whale — beautiful illustrations paired with natural talking points about the ocean and his journey.
  • Asking the right questions: why did the character do that? What might happen next? What do the pictures tell us that the words don’t?
  • Building from picture to page: short spoken and written responses that get your child used to explaining their thinking, not just retelling the plot.

Why It Matters

Many children at this age can “read” a picture book without ever really thinking about it. This is the exact window where active, questioning reading habits are built — habits that make longer chapter books far less daunting later on.

Mica Academy teaches this class live online, so your child gets a qualified English tutor whether you’re in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or anywhere else in Australia.

Term 3 runs 18 July – 25 September. Spots are limited — get in touch to enrol your child.
