Looking for a Year 3 NAPLAN English tutor? This term’s Year 2–3 novel study pairs a much-loved classic with a real writing skill your child will actually use across every subject — and across the NAPLAN writing and reading tests: information writing.
What This Class Is About
We spend the term with Ted Hughes’ The Iron Man — the story of a giant metal man who appears out of nowhere and starts eating farm machinery, sending the whole village into a panic. It’s a story with real tension, built around themes of fear and kindness that this age group loves to discuss.
What We’re Covering This Term
- Character and setting: getting to know the Iron Man, the terrifying space-dragon, and the world they live in.
- Story structure: close reading of how the plot builds tension and resolves it, plus practice with more complex sentence construction.
- From fiction to fact: a real-world research thread on iron and mining in an Australian context, connecting the story to the wider world.
- Information report writing: planning, drafting and polishing a factual report — learning to describe things clearly, organise information logically, and explain cause and effect.
Why It Matters for NAPLAN
By this stage, school — and NAPLAN — start expecting more than “the story made sense.” Writing needs structure and detail. This unit builds that skill directly, using a story your child will actually enjoy as the way in.
Mica Academy teaches this class live online, so your child gets a qualified English tutor whether you’re in Perth, Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane or anywhere else in Australia.
Term 3 runs 18 July – 25 September. Spots are limited — get in touch to enrol your child.
